Room-by-room mould prevention checklist

Room-by-room mould prevention checklist
Mould Advice Centre

Mould prevention works better when you think room by room. Different spaces create different moisture patterns, and the practical steps that help in a bathroom may not be the same as the ones that matter most in a bedroom or on a cold external wall.

Use this checklist as a quick prevention guide once visible mould has been treated or if you are trying to reduce the chance of repeat problems.

Bathroom

  • use extraction during and after showers
  • wipe down surfaces that stay wet for long periods
  • watch grout, silicone and ceiling corners for recurring spotting
  • treat visible mould early before it spreads

For visible mould on suitable bathroom surfaces, start with Mould Removal Sprays.

Bedroom

  • watch for condensation on windows
  • check behind wardrobes and beds on outside walls
  • keep some airflow around cold wall areas where possible
  • monitor repeat winter mould patches

If the issue keeps returning after treatment, review Mould Prevention & Primers and the broader advice in the Mould Advice Centre.

Kitchen

  • use extraction while cooking
  • avoid long periods of trapped steam
  • check cold corners and window areas
  • deal with surface mould before repainting or wiping over it casually

Living rooms and hallways

  • pay attention to external wall corners
  • check furniture positioned tightly against cold walls
  • look for staining or repeated seasonal condensation

Utility and laundry areas

  • reduce indoor drying moisture where possible
  • ventilate heavily used drying spaces
  • inspect ceilings and upper wall corners for early signs of condensation mould

Outdoor surfaces

  • keep an eye on patios, paving and driveways affected by organic growth
  • use a dedicated outside treatment route rather than an indoor one

For those areas, use Outdoor & Driveway Cleaning.

If prevention is no longer enough

If the same room keeps producing mould despite good habits and repeated treatment, the issue may be less about routine prevention and more about persistent moisture, hidden damp or another building condition that needs closer investigation.
