Mould treatment questions
Helpful answers before you begin
Which mould treatment product should I choose?
Start with the surface and the stage of treatment. Use a removal product for visible mould, a preparation or preventative product after cleaning, and specialist paint only on a properly treated, dry surface. Our product finder gives you a suitable category to start with.
Should I remove mould before painting?
Yes. Painting directly over visible mould or a damp surface is unlikely to solve the underlying problem. Clean and prepare the surface according to the relevant product instructions, allow it to dry, and address the moisture source before decorating.
Why does mould keep returning?
Recurring mould usually means moisture remains available through condensation, poor ventilation, a leak or another damp issue. Surface treatment can remove and protect the affected area, but the moisture cause also needs attention.
Can the same product be used on every surface?
No. Painted walls, grout, fabrics, timber and exterior paving can require different products and methods. Always check the product label, test an inconspicuous area where appropriate and follow the usage and safety directions.
When should I ask a professional for help?
Seek specialist advice when mould is extensive, repeatedly returns despite moisture control, follows flooding or a significant leak, or may be hidden within the building fabric. Take extra care where vulnerable occupants are affected.
